Handwriting style

Height from the top line to the baseline.

Trace style

Fading rows get lighter row by row. Yellow works like tracing over a highlighter.

Tracing darkness

Printed too faint? Pick Dark.

Starting dots

A green dot shows where each letter or number starts, and the arrow shows which way the first stroke goes. Works on traced print letters, numbers and single cursive lowercase letters.

Letter spacing

More space between letters helps writers who crowd them together. Print styles only, since cursive letters stay joined.

Row spacing
Rows
Paper
Orientation

Landscape gives longer rows.

Line weight
Highlighted writing band

Shades the space between the dashed line and the baseline on 3- and 4-line paper. Sky, grass, ground colors the top, middle and tail spaces.

For example: Trace each word, then write it on your own.

How to make a handwriting worksheet

  1. Type your practice text in the box, or use Quick fill for the alphabet, numbers 0 to 9 or a pangram. Use a new line for each sentence you want on its own row.
  2. Pick a handwriting style and a line size. Bigger lines suit early writers; 3/8 in and 5/16 in suit adults.
  3. Set how many tracing rows and blank rows you want, then press Print worksheet, or Download PDF to save the pages as a file.

Picking the right settings

Line size. The line size is the distance from the top guide line to the baseline. Children who are just starting usually do better with 1 in or 3/4 in rows, because big letters are easier to control. Older kids and adults can drop to 1/2 in or smaller.

Gray, dotted or outline. Gray letters are the easiest to see and trace. Dotted letters give a lighter guide, so the writer has to commit more of each stroke. Outline letters show the shape of each letter as a hollow form to fill in with the pencil.

Practice by line, word or letter. "Line of text" keeps your sentences intact. "Words" gives each word its own row, repeated across the line. "Letters" pulls out every different letter in your text and gives it a row of its own, which is handy for working on the letters in a spelling list.

Spacing. Letter spacing spreads the letters apart, which helps a writer who squeezes letters together see where each one starts and stops. Row spacing adds room between rows, so tall letters and tails don't bump into the row above or below.

Not sure whether to start with print or cursive first? The comparison guide covers what the research says about each.

Example: a sentence page

A parent types My dog is fast., picks Print, sets the line size to 3/4 in, and keeps two tracing rows and one blank row. The sheet shows the sentence once in solid letters, twice in gray letters to trace, and then an empty ruled row for their child to write it alone.

Questions people ask

Is this handwriting worksheet generator free?

Yes. Every worksheet maker on this site is free to use, with no account, no sign-up and no watermark on the printed page.

Does what I type get saved or sent anywhere?

No. The worksheet is drawn in your browser, so the text you type stays on your device. Nothing is stored after you close the page.

How do I save the worksheet as a PDF?

Press Download PDF. The pages are turned into a PDF file in your browser and saved to your device. You can also press Print worksheet and choose Save as PDF in the print window.

Can I use accented letters?

Yes. Letters such as é, ñ, ü and ç print in every style, along with the accented letters used in languages like French, Spanish, German, Polish and Czech. Characters the fonts can't draw, such as emoji, are left out, and the page tells you which ones.

Can I add more space between letters or rows?

Yes. Under Look, set Letter spacing to Wide or Extra wide for writers who crowd their letters, and Row spacing to Wide for more room between rows. Letter spacing works on print styles; cursive letters stay joined.

What handwriting styles can I choose?

Print, slanted print, traditional cursive and modern cursive. Print uses the Andika typeface, which was made for beginning readers. Both cursive styles use the Playwrite US typefaces, which were made for teaching handwriting.

Why are my traced letters too light when printed?

Printers vary. Set Tracing darkness to Dark, or switch the trace style from Dotted to Gray, and print again.

Can I put my child's name on the worksheet?

Yes. Type the name here, or use the name tracing worksheet maker, which can also make one page per name for a whole class.
